Hunting and Target Shooting

HUNTING

Hunting is permitted throughout the Angeles National Forest during hunting seasons designated by the California State Department of Fish and Game. Hunting is prohibited in the San Dimas Experimental Forest.

Hunting is not permitted in those areas where the discharge of firearms is prohibited by County Ordinance, California State law, or Federal regulations, and hunters must follow all laws, including no hunting within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site or occupied area. A valid California hunting license is required.

Bow hunting may be permitted in some firearm closure areas during legal hunting seasons. No bow hunting is permitted within designated recreation areas or special emphasis areas such as the San Dimas Experimental Forest. Please check with the State of California Department of Fish and Game, or a local Forest Service office for information on additional areas where bow hunting is permitted. A valid California hunting license and appropriate tag must be in possession.

TARGET SHOOTING AREASDollar sign (symbol for fee area)

Two concessionaire-operated shooting areas, which are under Special Use Permit with the Forest Service, are located within the Angeles National Forest. These are fee areas, and are the only legal areas for target shooting within the Angeles National Forest. Designated shooting areas also exist on the Los Padres National Forest (661) 683-6711 as well as large portions of Bureau of Land Management lands (909) 697-5204.
Range at
A Place to Shoot
Located 11 miles north of Saugus, CA at 33951 San Francisquito Canyon Road. "A Place to Shoot" offers several ranges - from pistol to high-power rifle. Paper targets - 7 to 100 yards; steel pistol plates - 25 and 35 yards; hand cocking clay throwers and an archery range is available.

Open Thursday through Monday, closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Summer months - 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in winter. Range fee is $7.50 for adults, $3.75 for children 17 and under. Senior discount on Fridays.

Burro Canyon Shooting Park
Burro Canyon Shooting Park is located one mile east of the junction of Highway 39 and the East Fork Road, north of the city of Azusa, CA and Interstate 210. Open Friday and Monday: 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sundays and most Holidays: 9:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This area offers paper targets, metallic reactionary, official "Speed Challenge" targets and clay targets for shotgun. Range fee is $7.00 for full day. No alcoholic beverages, tracer or steel core ammunition is allowed. Rapid firing is permitted only in specifically designated areas.
